I was of the belief that if you purchased personalised plates in the Smart State they belonged to the person buying them - wrong, the Smart State owns them. You just get the use of them.

Yep, same in WA, you buy the plates & put them on your car, as soon as you take them off your car, you are supposed to hand them into the police for safe keeping until you get to put them back on a car that you own..

Bit of a crap idea, but them the laws.

Here in Vic, you buy 'em, they're yours. Want to take 'em off one car & put 'em on another car, they charge you for the pleasure. You can hang 'em on your wall for all they care.

In the mighty Smart State of Qld, you do not have to put the plates on a car as I have several sets but the state actually owns the plates, bugger, I thought they were mine? I bought a set about 15 or so years ago as customised plates,I had to change them for a fee to personalised so they told me, if I wanted to ever sell them.

I was gunna ask what you have been smoking Lindsay as I know people that transfer them from car to car & I thought like neil, once you purchased them they are yours.
I nearly bought a set of ebay the other day & the transfer cost on them was around $70.

once u own them u can transfer as many times as u like between cars at no cost to you
you own the plate and the rights to your number on the plate

the plates you have are retro plates
u use to be able to get plates the gov still owns for $160 black n white in selected lellers N was one of then my retro plates that i was given are NOT510 for me to run them on a car i have to serrender the plates and at the same time personalise them then i can keep that combernation

the same as if u get a car with origanal plates with no reg u can personalise the plates by serrendering them then pay the fees to personalise them if u say thay where lost u serrender the combernation but not the plate and when u get the new plates u have still got the old steelys so the speed camras dont work on non reflective plates

One By one the garden gnomes steel my sanity

In the NT I think I paid $150/160 for personalised plates, but after my car was out of rego for more than a year they wanted me to pay the same price $150/160 to put them back on my car even though I still had them on my car so I just kept them, but you can pay a small yearly fee to keep them

Hey Shaun, this is the Qld Transport policy on the plates, thats what I was going on about the part in red:

TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR MAKING A PAYMENT VIA CHEQUE, MONEY ORDER, GIFT VOUCHER OR DINERS CLUB CARD.
Thank you for taking the time to order a personalised number plate ("Plate") from Personalised Plates Queensland ("PPQ"). By placing an order for a Plate, you agree to the following terms and conditions:

Any details provided during the ordering of a Plate are final. Any changes made to the Plate order after payment has been received will attract a manufacturing fee that corresponds to the original Plate type ordered.

PPQ reserves the right to change the price of Plates from time to time without notice. Prices quoted are in Australian dollars and are inclusive delivery anywhere in Australia (see Delivery Policy). Price does not include any other fees, taxes, duties and charges that may be imposed. Plates are GST exempt.

Payment can be made in one of the following ways:

Option 1: Cheques or Money Orders should be made payable to PPQ and mailed, with your details (name and plate combination) to “PPQ, PO Box 1794, MILTON BC QLD 4064”.

Option 2: Gift Vouchers can be used to make a payment by selecting the Gift Voucher payment option and entering the Gift Voucher Number. Gift Vouchers are valid for three months from the original date of the Gift Voucher purchase.

Option 3: You can use your Diners Club card to make a payment by calling the PPQ team on 136 356 during business hours. Use of the Diners Club card must be done so by, or with permission of, the Diners Club card holder.

Option 4: Payment can also be made in person at PPQ using all of the above payment methods and EFTPOS. PPQ is open between 8:30am – 5pm Monday to Friday and is located at Level 1, 52 McDougall Street, Milton (in Brisbane).

Please note that Bpay and Direct Debit are not available as payment options.

All orders are subject to PPQ's Delivery Policy.

PPQ reserves the right to automatically cancel a Plate order if payment is not promptly received once the order is submitted.

PPQ and Queensland Transport have absolute discretion in the manufacture of Plates and have the right to stop manufacture or recall any Plates considered inappropriate or offensive at anytime after the Plate order process has been undertaken.

PPQ will not issue a refund if a customer changes their mind after an order has been received by PPQ.

Pursuant to the Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Vehicle Registration) Regulation 1999 (QLD), acquiring Plates gives the customer the right to use the Plates (by either keeping them without them being attached to a vehicle or attaching them to the corresponding vehicle in the correct manner). The right to use the Plates also includes the right to transfer the right to use the Plates to another person (subject to any relevant fee that may be imposed by Queensland Transport). Although acquisition of Plates gives the customer the right to use the Plates, pursuant to the Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Vehicle Registration) Regulation 1999 (QLD), at all times the Plates remain the property of the State of Queensland.

Pursuant to the Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Vehicle Registration) Regulation 1999 (QLD), Plates that are damaged, lost, destroyed or stolen must be reported as such within 14 days after the registered operator discovers that they have been damaged, lost, destroyed or stolen. Failure to report may constitute an offence. Replacement of Plates does require payment of a fee.

Subject to any liability which cannot be excluded by law, PPQ is not liable for any loss or damage of any kind (including direct, incidental, special or consequential damages) however caused (including but not limited to by the negligence of PPQ) which is suffered or incurred in connection with these terms and conditions, use of the PPQ website, the non availability of Plates, the rejection of, or failure to receive, your order, any act or omission of PPQ or the provision of inaccurate or incomplete information provided by you. Without limitation to the foregoing, PPQ will not be liable for any functionality related errors or glitches caused by a user's attempt to manipulate, tamper with, or otherwise override the normal intended functioning of the "Create A Plate®" online system, including but not limited to any attempt to enter invalid Plate category and/or character combinations via the creation of multiple tab sessions, or by any other means.

Now I am confused,

"Are the plates mine for life? How do I transfer ownership?

Your personalised plates are yours for life. Should you ever wish to transfer the ownership of your plates,
you and the acquirer will need to complete a Transfer of Ownership Form and pay a modest fee, at your
nearest Queensland Transport Customer Service Centre."

Yes, it is a very strange clause, the the same remains with your standard rego plates, even tho you pay for them at the time of rego, they still belong to the GOV & you need to pay for them if you lose or need to replace them.

Don't know if the following makes much sense either?.

PART 3, section 27..

They may take my wife, but tho shall never take my plates.
