I paint stripped all the panels first and then had the blasting done. It takes the bulk of the work away from the blaster leaving the garnet to clean the panels. I then ran over every panel with clean and strip discs on a grinder. Came up nice. I also bought one of those red barrel type pot sand blasters and did the inside of the panels and the underneath of the car myself. I've heard horror stories of cars falling of rotiseries. |

Why not they have gotten cheaper, a mate of mine got a brand new one for around $2,000 & a carton for the leckky to hook it up. Ya can't go wrong with that if you have the room to put it. |

My car had a lot of paint on it from previous resprays so it took a bit getting off. I bought one of the blasters below and used up 4 bags (25kg) of garnet that can be recycled and used about 3 - 4 times before it looses its edge. The other trick I found handy was using a twist wire wheel on paint with paint striper on it. I had a boilers set of overalls on, gloves and face mask but it really gets the job done quick.
These blasters work good but they flog the compressor. I would suggest 15cfm or greater.

we use the same unit at work. in stead of usign pickeling paste on stainless, we run the sand blaster over it. (only for some applications)
we wouldn't be sandblasting BA (shinny) or mirror finish stainless now would we. |

| I had heard that sandblasting isnt as good as soda blasting, because the repeated impact of the beads on the thin sections like panels can cause them to warp slightly. |

Sandblasting is very aggressive and removes everything that is not steel. Bog, rust, sealer, deadener, flywire and fibreglass, everything. If it is done on flat panels like roof, boot, bonnet, doorskin, then it is very likely to warp it. The finished surface is coarse and etch or epoxy primer sticks 100%
Soda and plastic bead blasting is not as aggressive and will not remove rust, unlikely to remove all sealer or deadener also and will not clean & prep the surface to allow 100% grip of any etch or epoxy primer.
A good media blaster will do all parts of a car body shell with garnet and just the outside flats with plastic. You will have to abrasive clean the flat panels a bit yourself to get them ready for final prime, but they will be safe.
I personally would chemically paint strip the flat panel outsides myself first before sending to the blaster, and leaving just the edges underneath and insides to do. |
